The purpose of this work is to raise ecological awareness of old growth forests. Globally we’ve lost over 30% in the last century through unsustainable logging practices. We have reduced biodiversity and significantly stunted forests’ ability to store atmospheric carbon. As a young girl, in the Midwest, Cindy was in awe and inspired by the magnificence of walking among giant pine. She is humbled still whenever she encounters an old growth soul.
This three dimensional textile piece was created using resist, eco-printing, rusting, and stitching techniques. Cotton fabric and thread, plants for dying and printing, rusted metal, ink and paint were used to build up layers of fabric alteration. To achieve depth in this composition, focus was on both the removal and replacement of color and an unconventional use of thread.
